Getting the Best Results from PremierBond Spray Adhesives
Directions for Canister Use:
Step 1. Surface Preparation: Surface must be cleaned, dry and dust free. If used for decorative plastic laminates, the laminate and substrate should be properly conditioned prior to fabrication. Formica Ltd recommends conditioning materials for a minimum of 72 hours at approximately 20°C and at a relative humidity of 50 to 60 percent. Arrangements need to be made so that air can circulate around all components.
Step 2. Application:
(A) Apply a uniform, generous coat of adhesive, webbed evenly across the surface, with 80% to 100% coverage and approximately 3 – 5 mils thick, to the laminate first. Ideally one surface should be sprayed vertically and the other horizontally. Do not allow adhesive to puddle or “wet” the surface. One coat is usually sufficient for most surfaces, depending on surface porosity. For extremely porous surfaces an additional coat may be required. Protect from contamination while adhesive is tacking. Allow to tack completely. Adhesive will be ready to bond when it dries to the touch without transferring to your finger.
(B) Apply a uniform coat of adhesive to the core material and follow the same procedure as described in the previous paragraph referencing laminate material.
Step 3. Drying Time: PremierBond dries in approximately two/three minutes under normal climate conditions (21°C + and 50 % Relative Humidity). High humidity or low temperatures may slow the drying time. After the adhesive has dried to tack, the bond can be achieved for a period of several hours, providing the adhesive surface is kept free of contamination which would include dust, sawdust, wood particles or any foreign materials.
Note (1): Coverage is dependent upon porosity of the substrate and the methods by which the adhesive is applied. Canister systems should yield between 12 to 18 sq metres per Kilo.
Step 4. Assembly: Spacers, such as dowels or strips of laminate, may be used, if you choose, to prevent premature adhesive to adhesive contact and bonding prior to positioning. If this method is used, slide out the spacers and apply maximum uniform pressure, starting in the center and working toward the edges. A Pressure roller with maximum uniform body pressure, over entire surface area, should be used to ensure adequate contact and bonding, especially on edges. The use of a press or pinch/nip rollers is preferred for optimum performance. Bonded assemblies may be machined, trimmed, routed, etc. immediately after bonding.
Step 5. Curing of Adhesive Bond: Full curing will take approximately 24 hours. Longer curing can be caused by lower temperatures and higher humidities. Testing of the bond strength by “lifting” the edges should be delayed until the bond is allowed to fully cure. If the cohesive bond is broken prior to curing, strength loss will occur when repressed together.
Step 6. Cleanup: Adhesive overspray can be removed using CCAR (Citrus Cleaner Adhesive Remover).
